- [biochemistry] A specially altered nucleotide end to the 5' end of precursor messenger RNA and some other primary RNA transcripts as found in eukaryotes and caliciviruses, vital to creating mature messenger RNA which is then able to undergo translation.
5' cap a.k.a. Five-prime cap: In molecular biology, the five-prime cap is a specially altered nucleotide on the 5′ end of some eukaryotic primary transcripts such as precursor messenger RNA. This process, known as mRNA capping, is highly regulated and vital in the creation of stable and mature messenger RNA able to undergo translation during protein synthesis. Mitochondrial and chloroplast mRNA are not capped.
