HJ members wore a uniform composed ofa light brown shirt, a black scarf, an armband with swastika, black shorts, a waist belt, a shoulder belt and a dagger, white stockings and heavy marching shoes. The HJ was by no means an innocent youth movement. At twelve, boys trained in the use of rifles and machine guns, and at fourteen they attended military training camps for one month. Teenagers ages 16 to 18 had to serve in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (q.v., the German labor service).
