- A Long Goodbye
This was Bart's last night working at O'connor's. He was there for 10 years, and by now has a distinctly clear opinion on absolutely everything. It was crowded and unruly, too many elbows and not enough room. There was a hint of the debauched and messy quality of soldiers' last nights on furlough, or the night before the end of the world. After a certain hour Bart stopped picking up the tips off the bar. There were dollars scattered everywhere, as if they'd somehow become worthless when the day changed at midnight. As if the government had been overturned.
