a three masted norwegian barque in ballast bound for Florida, USA. Driven ashore in violent storm December 1894...the captain,16 crew,one cat,one dog rescued by blackpool lifeboat comprising skipper cartmell and 15 brave rescuers...ths ships bell can be seen at st.andrews church,cleveleys..the ABANA had departed liverpool previous day..remains can still be seen off norbreck some 200 yards from sea wall.

The wreck of the Abana
The Abana was sailing from Liverpool to Savannah, Georgia when she was caught in a storm in the Irish Sea, 22 December 1894. She was spotted at 3 pm drifting in a northwesterly direction with her sails torn to shreds. The crew had mistaken Blackpool Tower for a lighthouse and the ship was first spotted floundering at North Pier, and ended up drifting north and was wrecked off Little Bispham at 5 pm.
