Abenaki (sometimes Abnaki) means "eastern" or "dawn" people. The Pennacook lived in a northern environment of mixed forest suitable for light farming. Deer, moose, bear, small mammals, fish from fresh water rivers and lakes, migratory birds, salt water fish, and shellfish contributed most of the diet in season. Although the area is rather north for agriculture, maize and probably beans were raised. Fish caught were sturgeon, shad, and alewives; turtles and clams were harvested.
