Aechmorhynchus parvirostris is another species with no obvious present day close relatives, though 2 closely related species (one of them possibly conspecific) are now extinct, the White- winged Sandpiper Prosobonia leucoptera of Tahiti and the Sharpbilled Sandpiper Aechmorhynchus cancellatus known only from a single specimen. Like the Tuatamu Sandpiper both these latter species had a limited distribution in Polynesia.
