The Air Medal is a military decoration of the United States which was established by Executive Order 9158, signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, on 11 May 1942. The Air Medal was awarded retroactive to 8 September 1939.

Citation for the Air Medal presented posthumously to the widow of Civil Air Patrol Lt. Julian L. Cooper of Nashville, N.C., who died of exposure after his aircraft from Coastal Patrol Base No. 16 in Manteo, N.C., crashed at sea Dec. 21, 1942. He forever remains on external coastal patrol.
