Allium munzii

Allium munzii (Munz's onion)

Allium munzii (Munz's onion) is a federally endangered bulb-forming perennial herb endemic to western Riverside County, California. Plants are adapted to seasonal drought and variable annual rainfall and occur primarily in areas between 1,200 to 2,700 feet containing clay soils in association with grasslands, open coastal sage scrub, or occasionally juniper woodlands. Bulbs produce a single leaf and a leafless flower stalk 0.5 to 1.2 feet tall surmounted by a cluster of 10-35 white flowers that become red as they age. (Sally Brown/USFWS)
