Alloys a.k.a. Alloy: An alloy is a material composed of two or more metals or a metal and a nonmetal. An alloy may be a solid solution of the elements, a mixture of metallic phases or an intermetallic compound with no distinct boundary between the phases. Solid solution alloys give a single solid phase microstructure, while partial solutions exhibit two or more phases that may or may not be homogeneous in distribution, depending on the thermal history of the material. An inter-metallic compound has one other alloy or pure metal embedded within another pure metal.

Eighth Australasian Conference by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS)

Fullerton Road; Rotherham S60 lDL, UK Abstract Grain refinement of aluminium alloys with AlTiB master alloys is an important method to avoid casting defects and to improve subsequent processing of DC cast ingots. In the past a number of different AlTiB grain...

Introduction In the casting of aluminium, grain refinement with AlTiB master alloys is a well proven method to promote the formation of a fine, uniform, equiaxed grain structure. The benefits of an equiaxed grain structure ...

A Southern African Perspective by Pieter Cornelis Smit

A further reason for using metal alloys is that they are so easy to manufacture. Manogeability The currency should be light, so that it is easy to transport and handle, and its weight should be more or less proportionate to its value, otherwise the cost of transporting it would be too high. Wine does not meet this requirement: it is distributed mainly from the Cape and it must be placed in containers to prevent the bottles from breaking. If it is left in the sun for too long, the quality of the wine will ...

Aluminum and its alloys continue to grow in acceptance, particularly in the automotive industry. The electronics industry is another major user of cast aluminum for chassis, enclosures, terminals, etc. Most metallic elements can be alloyed readily with aluminum, but only a few are commercially important— among them copper, lithium, magnesium, manganese, silicon, and zinc. Many other elements serve as supplementary alloying additions to improve properties and metallurgical ...

Alloys. 3. Oxides. 2. Sulphurets. 4. Salts. It must be observed, however, that every metal has not hitherto been found in all these four states, and that some of them are hardly susceptible of them all. Some of the orders, therefore, want one or more genera, as may be seen from the following table, taken from Dr. Thomson's incomparable work on ...

ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE ALLOYS include both the types used in instruments and control equipment to measure and regulate electrical characteristics and those used in furnaces and appliances to generate heat. In the former applications, properties near ambient temperature are of primary interest; in the latter, elevated-temperature characteristics are of prime importance. In common commercial terminology, electrical resistance alloys used for control or regulation of electrical ...
