The American Birkebeiner is the largest, and one of the longest cross country ski races in North America. The two premier events are the 54 km classic and the 50 km freestyle race from Cable to Hayward, Wisconsin. Each year approximately 10,000 skiers participate in the Birkie, 26 km Kortelopet, and 12 km Prince Haakon events. The 2013 race was held on February 23. The 41st Birkie will be held on February 21, 2014. The Birkie is a member race of the Worldloppet Ski Federation.
