American State Bank

American State Bank in Berwyn (1925). It operated from 1925 to 1932, during which is was an important source of credit for Czech and Slovak immigrants to build houses. Over 20,000 buildings in Berwyn were built with mortgages provided by the bank. The city council held meetings here, as the city did not have a proper city hall until the 1930s. It's classical revival style also influenced the design of other buildings on Cermak Road, although most have since been demolished. Like many banks of the era, it could not survive the Great Depression.
