Definition of the noun Brassinosteroid

What does Brassinosteroid mean as a name of something?

  1. [steroid] Any of a family of steroidal plant hormones produced by members of the genus Brassica; the brassins

Brassinosteroid: Brassinosteroids are a class of polyhydroxysteroids that have been recognized as a sixth class of plant hormones. These were first explored nearly 40 years ago, when Mitchell et al. reported promotion in stem elongation and cell division by the treatment of organic extracts of rapeseed pollen. Brassinolide was the first isolated brassinosteroid in 1979, when pollen from Brassica napus was shown to promote stem elongation and cell divisions, and the biologically active molecule was isolated. The yield of brassinosteroids from 230 kg of Brassica napus pollen was only 10 mg. Since their discovery, over 70 BR compounds have been isolated from plants.

Brassinosteroid Signaling Brassinosteroid is a recently discovered class of hormones that plays an important role in plant growth and development. Studies in Arabidopsis identified mutants in BR biosynthesis or receptor genes display dwarfism whereas gain-of-function mutants overexpressing BR biosynthetic genes such as DWF4 and DET2 results in increased growth (Vert et al. 2005). Initial hints for the role of calcium/calmodulin signaling in BR signaling came from studies of dwarf ...

Science, Technology and Uses by J. Derek Bewley, Michael Black, Peter Halmer

Brassinosteroid Originally isolated from Brassica napus pollen, the brassinosteroid (BR) brassinolide (BL) was the first plant steroid to be shown to have hormonal properties, in that it can regulate stem elongation. Castasterone ( CS) is a brassinosteroid found in tobacco and tomato. Since then, BRs have been shown to exist throughout the plant kingdom in nearly all tissues analysed, being particularly abundant in pollen and immature seeds. BRs are essential for elongation in stems, ...
