Bania a.k.a. Bănia is a commune in Caraş-Severin County, western Romania, with a population of 2,014 people. It is composed of two villages, Bănia and Gârbovăț.

  1. The Bania is an occupational community of merchants, bankers, money-lenders, dealers in grains or in spices, and in modern times numerous commercial enterprises. The term is used in a wider sense in Bengal than it is elsewhere in India, where it is applied to specific castes.
    • also known as Vanika
  2. Bania is a Nepalese caste from the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The name Bania is derived from the Sanskrit word vanijya; by preference, Newar Banias anglicise their name as Bania rather than Baniya in order to distinguish themselves from the Indo-Nepali trading caste.
