- Le Grand Benard
A telephoto view of the distant Grand Benard from the same spot. This was very early in the morning. The first part of the approach is on a good road, but it is essential to make an early start partly because thick and heavy cloud usually builds up over the higher parts of the island on most afternoons, and also because the final approach to the volcano summit has to be on foot on fairly difficult terrain, and at significant altitude. So it is important to start early, carry emergency food and plenty of water, as well as wearing or carrying adequate mountain clothing. Even though this is in the tropics, it can be chilly at these altitudes and cloud and rain are fairly likely, and even snow is a possibility.
