Film

"Chassis" is the third film Philippine director Adolfo Alix Jr. shot this year; that’s three out of four if we count the one he just finished and released in his country. Contrary to what one might assume, the film is also radically different from the other three. Because, as Tony Rayns pointed out, Alix Jr’s cinema features a prolific vitality that echoes the work of Fassbinder and is capable of reinventing itself at an extraordinary fast pace with each film. Chas- sis’ Neorrealist story follows Nora, a mother who has been living under the trailers of parked trucks. She’s waiting for her truck-driving husband and has no choice but to turn to prostitution in order to pay for her daughter’s food and education. Strangely enough, that particular situation seems to work out just fine for Nora. Or at least it does so until the film’s resolution, in which Alix Jr.’s camera doesn’t hesitate to combine Neorrealism’s discomfort with the fatalist bitterness of the best Fassbinder.
