Mandibular Tomia Closeup

The rhamphotheca of the Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) has two protrusions known as mandibular tomia, or tomial teeth. Accipiter hawks and falcons have prominent tomial teeth, which are thought to aid in the dispatching of their prey, which is typically avian, by allowing them to efficiently sever the spine by biting at the base of the skull.
