It is a predominantly Kuki ethnic inhabited town with a sizeable population of Tamil, Nepali, Meitei and Muslims in Chandel district in the Indian state of Manipur. It is a rapidly developing and an important trade point in India on the border with Myanmar, with the town of Tamu being close to the border.
