Definition of the noun or gate

What does or gate mean as a name of something?

  1. a gate circuit in a computer that fires when any of its inputs fire
    • lexical domain: Artifacts - nouns denoting man-made objects
    • synonym of OR gate: OR circuit
    • more generic terms: gate / logic gate = a computer circuit with several inputs but only one output that can be activated by particular combinations of inputs

The OR gate is a digital logic gate that implements logical disjunction - it behaves according to the truth table to the right. A HIGH output results if one or both the inputs to the gate are HIGH. If neither input is high, a LOW output results. In another sense, the function of OR effectively finds the maximum between two binary digits, just as the complementary AND function finds the minimum.

No one can persuade another to change. Each of us guards a gate of change that can only be opened from the inside. We cannot open the gate of another, either by argument or emotional appeal. (Marilyn Ferguson)
