  1. Ustad a.k.a. Ustad Bismillah Khan: Bismillah Khan, often referred to by the honorific title Ustad, was an Indian musician credited with popularising the shehnai, a subcontinental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai had long held importance as a folk instrument played primarily during traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status and bringing it to the concert stage.
  2. Ustad a.k.a. Ali Akbar Khan, often referred to as Khansahib or by the title Ustad, was a Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Khan was instrumental in popularising Indian classical music in the West, both as a performer, and as a teacher. He established a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which is now located in San Rafael, California and has a branch in Basel, Switzerland. Khan also composed several classical ragas and film scores. He was a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

  1. Ustad: Ustād, which is a Persian word, is an honorific title for a man in South Asia. The title precedes the name and is usually used for well-regarded teachers and artists, most often musicians. It is applied and used via informal social agreement. It is abbreviated as ut. or ud. Aside from the honorific, the word is generally used by its literal meaning to refer to any teacher, master or expert in Urdu. Similarly, the term is used in some Martial Arts of South Asian origin to denote the rank of instructor. The title is also used by teachers of Arabic and Islam in the mosques of Indonesia and the Philippines. In Maldives, the title is used by people who possess a bachelors degree or above in the field of Law. Its feminine form is 'Ustada'.
  2. Ustad a.k.a. Jhetty is a Kshatriya community, which is thought to be originated in Gujarat. Ancient Jhetties were professional wrestlers. They had a good physique compared to others. When Ghazni attacked India, some of them left Gujarat and settled in south India in places like Madanapalle, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mysore, Bangalore, Chikballapur and Chennai.Since they were wrestlers, they were also called as Mallas. The word Mallas evolves from Malla-yuddha, which is an Indian Martial Art . In South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, Jhetties are called as Vastad. The evolution of this word is unclear.
